Free Web UI Sources

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Mashable has collected 10 sets of great UI templates for Photoshop, Illustrator and Omnigraffle. These sets include everything from icons, to skin-able vector buttons, to browser specific form elements that can really speed up the prototyping process. The posts get a little redundant if you go through the entire list, but there are definitely some gems if you dig a little.

Open Screen Project

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

This may have been up for a while, but it’s new to me. We’ve been working closely with Adobe for a few years on their multi-screen initiatives and are now officially a member of the Open Screen Project. Were listed among some pretty impressive partners and are glad to be part of the project.

In addition to this, we are part of a concept video on the OSP homepage. The first video in the carousel titled “Fun with Friends” includes a conceptual mockup of what our AIR Application Fanbase could look like in the future. It’s just a concept at this point, but is fun to see. The folks at Adobe did an amazing job putting this together.

Atlantic Participates in Adobe’s Flash 10.1 Mobile Launch

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Today Atlantic launched our first round of mobile websites in conjunction with our partners at Adobe. We launched 8 artist’s sites targeting Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1, with iPhone and iPod Touch coming later this month. This is a launch we were very proud to be a part of, and a project will be iterating on in weeks to come.

I’ll be posting more infomation on our new sites in the next few weeks, everything from getting started in mobile web development to Flash 10.1 specific issues.

Special thanks to Mike Mignano and Rob Beatty on my team at Atlantic Records for their continued help on this project.

Check out the press release here.

Check out my quote below:

“Flash gives us another great avenue to deliver music and videos to our fans on mobile devices, and beyond. Scale is key for us and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 allows us to create a great mobile experience, using content we already have, and familiar tools. We have already optimized some of our most popular artists’ websites for Flash 10.1 and are working to deliver new ones each week.”

Seen a font and want to know what it is? Check out What The Font.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Over the course of my career I’ve been asked (or have asked) “do you know what this font is?” hundreds of times. MyFonts.com has solved this problem by creating What The Font, a simple online tool that can identify fonts. You upload an image of a font, double check to make sure it recognizes the letters in the image properly, and click a continue. The font has been identified you are presented with buy links, the ability to rate the font, or the option to submit the font to the site to have it matched manually. The app works best when the font is isolated from other images or background texture, but in my experience it has proven very reliable.

Usability Assessment of MySpace Apps Leaked

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

MySpace has never been know for its simplicity or usability. Fortunately for users they were trying to do something about it. Unfortunately for MySpace those documents leaked online. MySpace was seeing poor install and retention rates for their apps compared to Facebook and hired a usability team to make some web design and user experience recommendations. It’s more pixel pushing than redesign, but a very interesting look into one do the largest sites on the web and how they strive to improve their business.
