MySpace has never been know for its simplicity or usability. Fortunately for users they were trying to do something about it. Unfortunately for MySpace those documents leaked online. MySpace was seeing poor install and retention rates for their apps compared to Facebook and hired a usability team to make some web design and user experience recommendations. It’s more pixel pushing than redesign, but a very interesting look into one do the largest sites on the web and how they strive to improve their business.

Trendspotting has put together a very thorough Slideshare presentation recapping social media trend predictions for 2010, with a slight twist. They are all Tweet sized – 140 characters or less. There are thoughts from quite a few industry leaders in the bunch and if you have the patience to look through 37 pages of Tweet sized sound bytes, there are a lot of really great ideas to be found.

We worked alongside Fox to launch both Fanbase Social and Fanbase Desktop for Avatar.

To announce a new store in Malmo Sweden, Ikea launched a social networking campaign using Facebook’s built in photo tagging features. Over the course of a few weeks the store manager uploaded pictures of 12 showrooms to his Facebook account. Whoever tagged an item in the showroom first with their name got to take it home. By doing this Ikea got into people’s news feeds, on their profile pages and into their links and were able to spread the word about their new store in a totally organic way. Check out the YouTube video below to see an overview of the campaign.

Over the past year or so Facebook has slowly been opening up more and more of their platform, making baby steps towards allowing all of a users data to be used on other websites. Earlier this week they opened up a little more, but this time releasing badges for the non-developer community. For personal accounts there is a profile badge as well as a photo badge allowing users to share profile information and selected photos on other websites using easy to implement embed code. For businesses there is a fan box, live stream box and a page badge. The Fan box allows people to become your fan or view your page stream, the live stream box allows users to post messages in real time and the page badge functions similar to the profile badge but for businesses. Check out all of the widgets on Facebook or see an implementation of the two personal widgets for my page below.

Personas is an amazing web app (with a Flex front end) that scours the internet for information based on a person’s name and builds a profile of how they are perceived online through natural language search. Since the application has no idea how to separate the list of people who share your name, it gives you an interesting view of the overall perception of your name, as opposed to you as an individual. The interface is clean, nice looking and you get to see the gears turning as it computes your profile.

In addition to this exciting mobile launch we also shipped our first Fanbase Connected Album. Fans who purchase Rob Thomas’ new album will be prompted to install his Fanbase Desktop application directly from the CD and will be delivered bonus content specific to purchasers of Rob’s album. Check out the Fanbase inclusion on Rob’s packaging below.
