With Instagram, I was a late adopter. Maybe it was resistance to using the iPhone as my primary camera, or filters anyone can use, or the idea that I actually would want to see my friend’s photos, but it took me a long time to warm up to Instagram. Over Thanksgiving, I spent some time on my grandfather’s farm in rural Illinois and began to see the appeal and have since become addicted to the app and now check it as much, if not more than Facebook and Twitter.

Since Instagram has no real native web presence (aside from a simple single photo viewer) I set about looking for a plugin to pull in my most recent photos and found Instapress.

With Instapress, the WordPress admin can select any feed and choose how many images to display, whether to show the picture’s title or not, and whether to use a lightbox to display your images inline or not. The plugin is extremely flexible and can be used as a shortcode in a post to show a single image, as a sidebar widget, or can be embedded in a page with a single line of code. So far I’ve been extremely happy with its reliability and simplicity and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an easy way to integrate Instagram into their WordPress Blog.

Yesterday the Atlantic Records digital team launched a mini site to promote the release of the new Shinedown single “Bully”. The page showcases the new music video and allows fans to share specific lyrics from the song by selecting them with their mouse cursor. Selecting a lyric will spawn a popup allowing fans to share the lyric via Facebook or Twitter. The campaign in one day has produced 5x more traffic than the first week the last single was available.

Carmen (Senior Director of Online Analytics at WEA) and I presented a case study from the current Bruno Mars record outlining Warner Music Groups’s strategy for using social media and analytics to track success across our artist’s web properties with an end goal of converting music listeners into customers.

How do you answer the question, “What is the business impact of my social media efforts?” How do you connect the conversations happening on your social networks to the systems that measure business performance? In this real-world session you’ll hear from Eric Snowden, VP of Creative & Technology at Atlantic Records and Carmen Sutter, Senior Director of Data Services at Warner Music Group as they share how Warner Music Group is leveraging the power of data to make smart social media strategy decisions and tie their fan aggregation and traffic-driving efforts to bottom line performance.

The interview was a continuation of our keynote speech from the Adobe Online Marketing Symposium last month.
A few weeks ago I was inspired by HackNY (where students design/develop/launch an app in 24 hours) and decided to try and fix a recurring problem I’ve been having with Facebook.I often want to segment my Facebook friends based on what they like (places, bands etc) and message them individually. Instead of posting to my wall and spamming everyone I know about an extra concert ticket I have, I wanted to be able to easily message my friends who “Like” the specific band.

So in 24 hours (not consecutive) I designed and built a simple app that accepts a Facebook login and allows you to search through your Friends likes. The first time you login modern browsers will cache your friends’ likes and save them to your computer for quick access. Logging out, or a manual reset, will empty the cache. The app is all Javascript with no database access, so nothing is being stored on my servers.

24 hours is not a long time, so chances are it’s not perfect, but it was fun to build something quickly that solved a problem. I was hoping to launch it later this week, but wanted to get it live today due to the new Bing Facebook integration and wide discussion around social search.

I’ve deployed it as a website here and a Facebook app here.

Today Portugal. The Man was featured on the official Twitter blog highlighting their use of the service. In fact, all of the artists mentioned (Paramore, Jay-Z, Chromeo) are part of the Atlantic family. It’s exciting to see how artists really taken to Twitter (and subsequent micro-blogging services) to create real connections and conversations with their fans. Technologies ability to connect fans and bands is a key part of the future success of our industry and it’s great to see our artists getting recognized.
