Fast Company, MTV, WMG and Atlantic

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

This week Atlantic and Warner Music Group were the subject of a great article in Fast Company, as well as a pretty major announcement regarding our new ad partnership with MTV. I constantly feel proud to be part of a music company who is changing and innovating in a troubled industry, surrounded by extremely difficult economy.

Atlantic Participates in Adobe’s Flash 10.1 Mobile Launch

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Today Atlantic launched our first round of mobile websites in conjunction with our partners at Adobe. We launched 8 artist’s sites targeting Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1, with iPhone and iPod Touch coming later this month. This is a launch we were very proud to be a part of, and a project will be iterating on in weeks to come.

I’ll be posting more infomation on our new sites in the next few weeks, everything from getting started in mobile web development to Flash 10.1 specific issues.

Special thanks to Mike Mignano and Rob Beatty on my team at Atlantic Records for their continued help on this project.

Check out the press release here.

Check out my quote below:

“Flash gives us another great avenue to deliver music and videos to our fans on mobile devices, and beyond. Scale is key for us and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 allows us to create a great mobile experience, using content we already have, and familiar tools. We have already optimized some of our most popular artists’ websites for Flash 10.1 and are working to deliver new ones each week.”

My Pic In Billboard Magazine

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

A picture of the panel I was on at NARM 2010 showed up in Billboard Magazine this week. I’ve been interviewed by Billboard before but have never seen my picture in print without knowing about it beforehand. While this may only be interesting to my friends and family, I wanted to post it here for posterity.

NARM 2010 Mobile Applications Panel

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Today I was on an amazing panel at the 2010 NARM Convention discussing the use of applications in the music industry. While the focus was on mobile apps, we discussed desktop apps, widgets and the mobile web as well. The panel was moderated by Tom Constabile from Verizon Wireless and contained experts in design, development, and publishing. It was a great honor to be included in a healthy debate on an important part of the music business. I’ll be posting a link here once the video is online.

Apple to shut down Lala on May 31st

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Apple purchased Lala.com a few months back and faithful Lala users have been holding their collective breaths waiting for Cupertino to let us know the fate of the popular streaming service. In my inbox this morning was the following automated message from Lala.

Dear Eric,

The Lala service will be shut down on May 31st.

In appreciation of your support over the last five years, you will receive a credit in the amount of your Lala web song purchases for use on Apple’s iTunes Store. If you purchased and downloaded mp3 songs from Lala, those songs will continue to play as part of your local music library.

Remaining wallet balances and unredeemed gift cards will be converted to iTunes Store credit (or can be refunded upon request). Gift cards can be redeemed on Lala until May 31st.

Click here or visit Lala.com/support for more information, or to view Lala’s Terms of Service.

Thank you.

Lala

It’s a sad day for music fans but it’s nice to see Apple is doing the right thing and giving consumers iTunes store credits equal to the amount they spent on web songs. Personally I hope to see another incarnation of Lala’s technology soon, as I have almost entirely given up listening to music in iTunes. It looks like my Rhapsody subscription will have to tide me over until Apple tells us what the future holds.
