Redesign

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

It’s been a long time coming. My old site had been up for over four years, and although I always managed to keep the work up to date it never really fit me stylistically. The redesign started out as purely visual (as it does for most designers) but really progressed into a rethinking of me online. I’ve added sharing features, commenting that integrates into social networks, links to all my social profiles, and have re-architected my site by removing or reorganizing about half the nav items that had been bolted onto the old site as it grew over time. I think the largest change comes in the form of this blog. In the past I had very rudimentary blogging capabilities on my site (which was really an rss feed being parsed by Coldfusion) and now have a full WordPress blog, stuffed with plug-ins and fully integrated into my site.

I’ve started working on a new post detailing the IA, design and build process for this site – hoping that some of what I went through in the build can help out other designers trying to showcase their work online. There is still polishing I want to do (validation errors, better seo, missing content) but even showing how the site gets tweaked and polished over time could be interesting to people just starting out, or struggling with the how/why of portfolio sites.

Special thanks to Amy Stein and Mike Mignano for their design and css input.

Adobe MAX 2008

Monday, November 24th, 2008

I’ve had a few days to recoup from lack of sleep after Adobe’s MAX 2008 conference and wanted to recap the amazing experience I had at the conference, as well as share the involvement Atlantic had at MAX.

Max 2008 Keynote

On Monday we had our Flash Lite application Fanbase Mobile shown on stage by Kevin Lynch, the CTO of Adobe, in front of the press and a few throusand of our peers. Below is a video of our contribution to the keynote.

Fanbase Mobile

Beyond the keynote we had Fanbase running on both a Nokia N95 as well as a Blackjack II. It great to see it running on a few devices and get an idea of how it might scale across an entire product line using Flash Lite.

On Tuesday, I tended to the Adobe partner booth and answered questions about the Fanbase AIR application for a few hours. It was great to get to talk to consumers and developers about the application and about Adobe’s AIR platform.

Sessions

In addition to the special conference events both Paul Sinclair (SVP of Digital Media) and I gave sessions. Paul was on a panel talking about the Open Screen Project from Adobe, which is an inititative to provide a consistent runtime and user experience across devices.

I also gave my own session on Tuesday “Atlantic Records: Connecting Fans with Bands”. I talked in depth about our new product plan around two key Atlantic artists, showing a full range of new media projects used to promote new releases.

You can watch the presentation here.

Herald Whig

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

My hometown newspaper, the Quincy Herald Whig, wrote an article about me around the idea of people making a career out of being creative and doing something they love. The people in the art and music communities back home were a huge influence on me, so I was very happy to be able to talk about my experiences in a way that might inspire other young people back home to choose a slightly less traditional career path.
